The United Nations has decided to build their first 80,000 sq ft global warming research facility on top of a toxic dump in San Francisco. The center is expected to cost $20 million if it comes in on budget, with the main beneficiary being Lennar Corp.
Hunters Point Shipyard, a once toxic eye sore near the Bay, is being converted into a Green Campus, attracting academics from local colleges and institutions.
Community groups and venture capital funds are putting time and money on the line to make sure the center is built. Most locals in the area support the new Compact Center, although there’s been some resistance to the planned facility from various groups.
